West Webster with mutual assist from Sea Breeze responded early this morning for the report of a vehicle fire that was extending to a house on Lake Rd. While responding, units were advised of second call reporting the same. Engine 125 went on location with a vehicle fire with an exposure problem. While firefighters started a fire attack, William Spengler opened fire on the firefighters with a high powered rifle. Four firefighters were struck, with two dying at the scene. One Firefighter took shelter inside Engine 125 and radioed for help. Police arrived on scene and attempted to secure the scene. The firefighter that was trapped in the fire truck for some time until two civilians assisted him into a vehicle and help him escape.
The injured firefighters are:
Joe Hofstetter who works as a career firefighter in Rochester at Engine 2
The firefighters that were killed are:
Tomasz Kaczowka, early 20′s and a 911 Dispatcher
Mike Chiapperini, 43 who was also Lt with the Webster Police.
Firefighter Joe Hofstetter was shot in the pelvis and is in ICU.
Firefighter Theodore Scardino was shot two times, once in the knee and once in the shoulder. He is also in the ICU.
The shooter is William Spengler who also killed his grandmother 30 years ago and served time in prison. He was a convicted felon and should not have had a gun. He died at the scene of a possible self inflicted gun shot wound.
The incident is currently under investigation.
